Chocolate And Acne: Good or Bad?

In this article we’re going to try to clear up the myth that eating too much chocolate causes acne.

You’ve heard all the warnings by your mother growing up. "Don’t eat too much chocolate, you’ll break out!" You’d have to sneak out of the house to get a chocolate fix. And if you were like most kids, you did anything to get that fix.

But was chocolate really the culprit for all those pimples?

Studies show, based on a typical teenager’s diet that chocolate may have been the least of the offenders when it came to bad complexions. The truth of the matter is, pimples are caused by a number of factors other than chocolate.

For starters, bad hygiene is one of the worst causes of bad complexions. Let’s face it, most teenagers, especially boys, are too busy outside playing sports and getting dirty. Washing up is not exactly a priority to them. And when dirty hands touch dirty faces that is just prime breeding ground for acne.

Then there is the matter of diet outside of chocolate. One of the main causes of acne is oil. Many of the foods that teenagers eat have lots of oil in them. One of the main offenders is pizza. Let’s be honest, a teenager without at least five slices of pizza during the week is not a teenager. Most kids who eat in school will choose that slice of pizza over whatever there may be served that day that is at least somewhat healthy.

Then there is the next thing on the list, fried foods. Fried foods make up more of a teenagers diet than just about anything else. Most kids live out of a Burger King, Wendy’s or McDonalds. French Fries are certainly number one on any kids hit parade. And who doesn’t just love a good bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken?

But to further disprove that chocolate actually causes acne, there are a number of new skin care products on the market that are actually made of chocolate or have chocolate as an ingredient.

There are some companies that put chocolate into their skin creams as a softener. According to these companies, the antioxidants of the chocolate also help in preventing wrinkles.

Theoretically, cocoa might actually prevent damage by free radicals to collagen, elastin and other proteins in the skin. Of course medical science has yet to either prove this or disprove this.

Proof or no proof, at least 90 chocolate based cosmetics popped up last year and the market for chocolate based cosmetics is growing daily. As a matter of fact the normal booth that is displayed at the Chocolate Show in New York has blossomed into a full blown spa. Consumers are claiming that the chocolate based skin care products that they are using do in fact have healing properties. Again, this has neither been proved or disproved.

The point is, there are many more offenders of bad skin than just chocolate and by avoiding fried foods and dirty hands, your teenager will more than likely have a cleaner skin.

Chocolate has been said to be the kind of food that only those with great power can eat. This was during the early times when the early civilizations were just making their mark in the world. Just like honey, chocolate is like a special kind of food that not everyone can eat. It is that special that even today, chocolate is something that is given to those who are special in your heart or given during special occasions. Although everyone can eat chocolate now, it is not everyday that you are given such. Being given chocolate has some special meaning to it.

However, it is also this sweet food that has the reputation of being a bringer of acne. That is why not all people eat this everyday and not all people have a penchant for eating a good amount of this. Come to think of it, if you do eat chocolate, two things happen to your body – you get added fat and you could get acne. The fat part is sure however the acne part varies for every person. Those who are acne sufferers try to stay away from this food as much as they can.

But there is a new chocolate product in the market right now which is said to be not like the chocolate that we know right now. This one is a special one because it has been mixed with things that will not give you the same effects as ordinary chocolate. This is known as the Acne Care and they are chocolate bars. Try them out and you will also be taking in antioxidants as well as micro-nutrients. Now these two are known to be helpers of the skin so that you do not get any kind of blemish nor any type of acne. In fact, they help make your skin look clear.

Answer: Kind of. There is no direct correlation between eating chocolate and having an acne breakout, but eating an unhealthy diet high in unnecessary sugar and saturated fat will make one’s acne worse.

If you have to eat chocolate, I recommend eating it in moderation. You can do virtually anything supposedly "bad" for your acne [popping pimples, eating chocolate...] in moderation and you will not be too affected.
Other junk foods, including pizza, sodas, and potato chips are often also blamed for causing acne.

overnight home remedy for acne

What truly causes acne is a buildup of dead skin cells in an individual pore, there is no food in the world that will specifically cause this to take place.

Of course, everyone is different. Different people respond to different things, there is always a possibility that you could be allergic to a specific food that you did not previously know about that could trigger an acne breakout.

In a surprising twist, there is new information and research coming out that hints that eating dark chocolate, in moderation, could help keep acne under control. Dark chocolate has a high concentration of flavenoids, which has been known to have several health benefits, including lowering bad cholesterol.

This past May, there has been a huge buzz about a new special chocolate that is supposed to help treat acne, it retails at over fifty dollars at some places! That is crazy! I have not done much research on this but if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Does chocolate cause acne? Yes chocolate definitely can cause acne in some people, depending on your genetics. There are many foods that can cause acne depending on your genetics.

If I eat a large milk chocolate bar it will usually give me cystic acne somewhere on my body within a few days. It usually takes 3 days until you will breakout from a certain food after you eat it. (If you are allergic to that certain food.)

If you have a cystic acne bump that never goes away, then you are probably eating the food that is causing the bump on a regular basis. (Synthetic lotions absorbed through your skin could also be causing the cyst also.)

You see, your skin is an eliminatory organ also, and sometimes it will eliminate toxins through your skin if it needs to.

Some people say that the whole toxins thing is nonsense, but just think of Poison Ivy. It is so toxic, that you don’t even have to eat it to break out from it. You only have to touch it. Also not everyone is allergic to Poison Ivy.

All plants on the planet are not fit for human consumption and can be toxic. Just think of deadly mushrooms. They are so toxic that they can kill you if you accidentally eat one.

Back when I was finding the cure for my acne, I would cycle through phases of eating large quantities of the same food, and then not eating that certain food for a while and then notice the condition of my skin.

One day I decided to test milk chocolate bars to see if they made me break out. I didn’t eat any chocolate or chocolate bars for a few weeks to make sure that all chocolate was out of my system. I did not have acne on my forehead after the 3 weeks.

To test to see if chocolate bars were causing me acne, I ate a couple large chocolate bars every day for a few days in a row. On the third day I developed cystic acne on my forehead. I then quit eating them on the third day. It took about a week and a half for the cystic acne bumps on my forehead to go away. Coincidence? Not at all. I have done this test many times over the past few years.

best acne cure or treatment

I have also tested many other foods the same way that I tested chocolate. Over the last 6 years I have been testing every food that I eat to see if it makes me break out. I now have a list of foods that were causing my acne, and a list of foods that do not cause me to break out with acne.

Chocolate bars are not the only food that can cause acne. Any food or substance can cause acne if you have a food allergy to it.

So, does chocolate cause acne? Here is the answer. Yes it can if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the chocolate bars. It might be the oils that they put in the chocolate bars that are making some people break out from eating them. Or it could be the chocolate itself.

Does chocolate cause acne in everyone? The answer is no. Since everyone’s genetics are slightly different, some people might be able to tolerate eating chocolate without breaking out. Also your overall diet will be a factor.

Why does chocolate cause acne in some people but not others even though they have very similar genetics like brothers and sisters? Your body has to use the fats that you eat to make the oil that it puts on your skin. If the majority of your dietary fats are from clogging type oils (like the kind in chocolate bars) then your body will have to use what it has to work with. One sibling might eat an overall healthier diet than the one with acne.

If you were to include more non-clogging, non-allergenic oils (like extra virgin olive oil) into your diet, then your body will have the right kind of dietary building blocks it needs to keep your skin moisturized, without the oil getting stuck before reaching the surface of your skin. Your body will then have more of a choice, and not be forced to use the acne causing types of oils.

I know that you have probably read all over the Internet, and told by your doctor that food does not cause acne, but I now know that it does. I had cystic acne until I changed my diet. It all started in junior high school when we had the freedom to skip lunch and eat at the snack bar. I would eat chocolate and peanut butter cups and a soda every day instead of lunch. I had bad acne then, but I didn’t see the connection at the time.

Recently I have been keeping a food journal for 6 years, and now I know that certain foods make me break out, so I just avoid them if I want my skin to remain clear. And chocolate bars definitely make me break out. I have tested it many times over the last few years.

Is Chocolate The Root Cause Of Acne?

Several studies have been made to enquire about food that causes or can cause acne. But there is no clear evidence that this food causes acne and this doesn’t.

1. Acne is caused by consuming chocolate.

The fact that consuming chocolate causes acne is a myth that has been around for years. Doctors and scientists after considerable research have refuted the old myth that chocolate causes acne. Why is that?

A chocolate candy bar is innocent, but is blamed regularly. Other foods that are blamed include pizza, potato chips and dairy products. No foods have been proven to cause acne. If a person maintains a healthy diet and consumes healthy vegetables and fruits, acne can be prevented.

permanent cure for acne

Other myths about acne.

2. Acne is caused by dirt.

Wrong! Acne is caused by a number of things, but dirt isn’t one of them. Blemishes form when dead skin cells mix with your body’s natural oil, forming a plug in the tiny hair follicles commonly called pores. This has nothing to do with dirt, so overwashing your face or body (more than 2-3 times per day) will not make your acne better. In fact, too much washing or the over-use of harsh scrubs and "pore strips" can actually strip the skin of the oil it needs to stay soft and pliable. The result? Dry, flaky skin that may actually produce more oil.

3. Acne is for teenagers – you’ll grow out of it.

This myth is harmful in several ways. First, it can lead teenagers to "wait it out" instead of seeking treatment for their acne; this can result in plummeting self-esteem and in severe cases of acne, scarring. Second, this myth can cause further alienation in adults who suffer from acne. They may feel too embarrassed to seek treatment, wondering "Why do I still have acne? What am I doing wrong?" The truth is, acne can strike at any age; it’s not your fault.

4. Make-up causes acne.

Most make-ups today are non-comedogenic, which means they won’t clog your pores. When shopping for cosmetics, look for products that are non-comedogenic, oil-free (water-based) and hypoallergenic (no added fragrance).

5. Sun exposure helps acne.

Wrong! The "Bronze Age" is over! Minimal amounts of sun exposure may initially improve the appearance of acne – as the skin darkens, blemishes may be less noticeable. But prolonged exposure promotes more rapid exfoliation of dead skin cells, so you’re more likely to get clogged pores. In addition, acne’s unsightly souvenirs, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and macules, will actually get darker if you spend time in the sun. Over time, sun damages the skin and increases the likelihood that your acne will leave scars.

So, does chocolate cause acne? The answer is NO. We know that chocolate is basically harmless unless, like everything else, it is over-consumed. Chocolate has been found not to cause nor aggravate outbreaks of acne. These results are backed up by further research that shows acne in no way is affected by chocolate.

Food in and of itself is not responsible for acne. There are, however, other elements that cause acne. The first being heredity, hormones, skin type, cosmetics and the environment.

As a self confessed chocoholic, when I first started getting acne the most important question to me was "Does chocolate cause acne?"

There are conflicting opinions about eating chocolate and whether it does or doesn’t cause acne. It’s a common question that I’m sure many acne sufferers would like to know so here’s some details about the effects of eating chocolate and how certain chocolate may actual contribute towards clearing your skin.

Chocolate in general will not be the sole cause of your acne but the sugar and chemicals in it could contribute to acne if you consume too much. It’s the same for any other foods in your diet if you eat far too much unhealthy food it will affect your body which can in turn affect your acne.

The cocoa in chocolate is actually great for your skin because it contains antioxidantsmong other beneficial ingredients. If you like drinking chocolate I’d opt for organic cocoa which has less sugar. Also look for cold compressed cocoa in particular because this has more of the good stuff like vitamins and minerals.

how to cure acne at home home remedy

The best type of chocolate bar for your skin is dark chocolate as it contains more cocoa. Although the cocoa in chocolate can help your skin it’s not a miracle cure. It’s one of those little steps you can do as part of an overall acne treatment plan.

You know better than anyone if certain foods cause breakouts more than others. Trying to avoid consuming chocolate that is high in sugar and opting for an organic dark variety so that you don’t need to feel guilty when you indulge in your chocolate addiction. If you like milk chocolate then there’s no harm in alternating between the two kinds – it’s just dark chocolate is better for you.

Does eating chocolate really cause acne? This is the big question that almost everyone asks about acne and it has been much disputed for many years. There is hardly anyone who does not like chocolate, that is why we have always wanted to know if it actually can cause acne or not. I’m sure that you heard at least one person, or more, say that chocolate can cause acne. Well there are a lot of people that do believe this myth and do indeed try and stay away from chocolate and you are probably not sure if its true or not, otherwise you would probably be eating a bar yourself whilst reading this article.

cure for acne on arms and legs

Well there are actually two answers to this, the shorter answer is "no" and the longer one is "not really, chocolate does not cause acne". More confused are you? I guess that probably does not explain much so I will give you a little more detail on the causes of acne so you would be able to understand. The sebaceous gland under the skin produces an oil called sebum which travels up hair follicles taking off dead cells and then moisturizing the skin. Acne starts when the sebum oil gets trapped beneath the skin, this can be caused from various reasons such as an overproduction of the oil causing the follicle to block up, dead cells that have not been cleared up properly or the pore might be blocked from the top of the skin.

So chocolate cannot cause acne on its own but a bad diet can however cause acne. Too much fat, too much sugar and any other food that can affect your individual hormone production can affect your sebum oil production which can result in acne. So basically chocolate really does not cause acne but your entire diet can. Chocolate can either be a part of a healthy diet or an unhealthy diet it all depends on you and the quantities of fatty/oily foods.

You will probably always hear personal stories from all sorts of people where they claim that some of their acne problems are actually connected to chocolate in some way or another, where in fact this is probably not caused by the chocolate itself but from their entire diet in general or it could possibly be their genetics, or the acne can even be the result of an allergic reaction to chocolate which would really be bad because almost everyone loves chocolate.

Valentines Day, Halloween, Christmas, and the list continues. Each day has the consumption of chocolate in common. The days prior to and the days after these holidays, coach would always jump on our backs. He’d say something like, "I Hope you’re not eating too much junk food. You wouldn’t want to breakout because of eating a bunch of garbage would you?" I found it interesting that coach would say this. It’s said almost everywhere that your diet has nothing to do with your complexion.

sea salt to cure acne

After questions began running through my head, I became curious. I decided to run an internet web poll on Myspace and a few of my blogs. The results that came in were pretty interesting. The following information is an exact copy of the poll results based on 9/25/09. Note that results could have since then changed.

The Question: Does Chocolate Cause Acne? If so, what kinds?

  • Dark – 7.4%
  • White – 4.9%
  • Milk – 21.0%
  • Other – 2.5%
  • All kinds make me breakout – 30.9%
  • Not a single kind makes me breakout – 44.4%

Although only 81 people were polled, it’s interesting to see that 30% of the people believed that all chocolates cause them get acne. Only 44% of people believed that there is no link between chocolate and acne. Then of course, there is the 21% milk chocolate statistic. Could it be that milk contributes to acne?

There is no scientific evidence that can prove anything yet. However, I find it interesting that so many people continue to link to two things together.

Test and see what makes you breakout.
Although there is no scientific evidence that links your diet to acne, you can still do self tests. Try eating the same 4 or 5 different meals throughout the week. Then, add chocolate to your diet.

Author: Taylor Thompson

By following the above routine, you’ll be able to see firsthand, foods that do and do not cause you to get acne. Does chocolate give pimples to those who consume it? I’m not sure, and there is not scientific evidence to prove it. Again, try following the test I have provided you with above. It’s the only way to see whether or not something you eat is causing your acne.

That is a very good question. There has been much debate over this question for some time now. Some people say that eating chocolate causes more acne than if you didn’t eat the chocolate and some say that only greasy and fatty foods cause acne. After reading, you are going to discover the answer to the question, does eating chocolate cause acne.

get rid of genital acne in 2 days

Well, the simple answer is no, eating chocolate does not cause acne. There are several things that cause acne and eating chocolate is not one of them. Acne is usually caused by more than one thing. The most common reason for acne is that there is too much sebum in your cells. Your skin constantly reproduces itself and old skin cells die. When the sebum mixes with oil and other bacteria is causes acne. Don’t worry though, it can be treated.

What you first need to do is diagnose your acne severity. Each person is unique and will have a unique case of acne. What you can also do is be sure to clean your skin on a daily basis. Too much oil is bad and can cause beakouts, but be careful because if you didn’t already know, too much cleansing can also be bad. If you clean your skin too much it can also cause breakouts.

The best option you can seek out is to find a product or system that has been proven to work for a large amount of people. There are hundreds of treatment options so do some research before choosing one or maybe even try out two different ones because most often there are products that will work great for some people and not at all for other people.
